Total Dissolved Solids or (TDS) are the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water. Total Dissolved Solids are directly related to the purity of water and the quality of water purification systems and affects everything that consumes, lives in, or uses water, whether organic or inorganic, whether for better or for worse. So the more TDS in your water the worse for your health.

Why Should You Measure the TDS Level in Your Water?

The Environmental Protection Agency advises a maximum contamination level (MCL) of 500mg/liter (500 parts per million (ppm)) for TDS. Numerous water supplies exceed this level. When TDS levels exceed 1000mg/L it is generally considered unfit for human consumption.

A high level of TDS is an indicator of potential concerns, and warrants further investigation. Most often, high levels of TDS are caused by the presence of potassium, chlorides and sodium. These ions have little or no short-term effects, but toxic ions (lead arsenic, cadmium, nitrate and others) may also be dissolved in the water.

Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), also known as redox potential (from the English RedOx-Reduction/Oxidation) is a unit of chemical activity of elements or compounds in reversible processes associated with the change of the ionic charge. The value of oxidation-reduction potential (Eh) for each redox reaction is calculated with a fairly complicated formula, expressed in millivolts (mV) and can be both positive and negative. In nature, the Eh value is in the range from -400 to +700 mV.

Normally, the ORP of the internal environment of the human body is in the range from -100 to -200 mV if the organism is in the regenerated state. ORP of normal drinking water (tap water, bottled water, etc.), measured in the same way, is almost always more than zero, and generally lies in the range from +200 to +300 mV. The difference in ORP of the internal environment of a human body and drinking water means that the electron activity in a human body is much higher than the activity of the electrons in drinking water.
